Vernon was elected to the New Mexico State Senate in 2004 and served in his first legislative session in 2005.Committess include LEFC, Water & Natural Resources, Radio Active Hazardous Material, Public Schools Capital Outlay Oversight Task Force and Indian Affairs. He is currently serving on Public Affairs and the ranking member of the Education Committee.
Vernon was born to Tom and Olivia Asbill on April 11, 1945 in San Angelo, Texas. He graduated from high school in Sterling City, Texas in 1963. In 1967, he married Kate Elizabeth Null. They have two children, Christy Kay Takacs and Corey David Asbill.
Vernon and Kate started their teaching careers in Breckenridge, Texas. After a year, they moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico. In 1970, Vernon and Kate moved to Artesia where Vernon taught and coached at Artesia High School and Kate taught at Hermosa Elementary School. Vernon became an administrator in the Artesia School System in 1979 as the assistant principal at the High School. He assumed the principalship of Zia Intermediate School in 1984.
In 1988, he was hired as the Superintendent of Schools of the Cloudcroft Municipal Schools and Kate was hired as the Principal of Holloman Primary School in the Alamogordo School District.
After eight years as the Cloudcroft Superintendent, Vernon was hired as Superintendent of Schools in Carlsbad, and he held that position until he retired on August 1, 2003. He is an Educational Consultant. He and Kate continue to live in Carlsbad.
