Linda M. Lopez has represented Bernalillo County's South Valley and Westgate Community in the New Mexico Legislature for the past thirteen years.
Lopez has served as chairman in serval organizations, including Senate Rules Committee Chairman since 2002, Welfare Reform Interim Oversight Committee Chairman, Legislative Ethics Committee Co-Chairmain since 2004, Senate Democratic Caucus Chairman and Bernalillo Couty Democratic Party Chairman (2002-2004).
Lopez attended Valley High School and was involved in student government. After graduating with honors from high school, she received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the College of Santa Fe, followed in 1992 with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Four years later Lopez became the first woman elected from her area to the New Mexico Senate
She has served on the Senate Judiciary Committee and for the past eight years has been Chairman of the powerful Senate Rules Committee. She also sat as Chair of the Bernalillo County Democratic Party from 2003 to 2005.
During her tenure as Chair of the Welfare Reform Oversight Committee, she worked to ensure that those receiving welfare (mainly single mothers) had access to childcare, training opportunities and quality health care for themselves and their children.
As chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, the committee responsible for confirmation hearings of the Governor’s top appointees, Lopez has implemented, with the help of Attorney General King, criminal and financial background checks so we know the record of those we entrust with our state government. She has also sponsored and passed into law the legislation that at long last put a cap on political contributions, and am sponsoring SB 43, Enacting the State Ethics Commission Act, in the upcoming legislative session.
