New Mexico State House Representative Thomas A. Garcia represents District 68, which includes Colfax, Guad, Mora, S.M. and Taos. Garcia serves on several committees including the Business and Industry Committee and the Education Committee.

Thomas A. García was born  in Cleveland, New Mexico, as the fourth of five sons to Leo and Aurora García. 

 

Garcia graduated from Wagon Mound Public Schools as a member of the National Honor Society, participating in Boys State and was Valedictorian of the class of 1990.  

 

Upon graduation Garcia attended New Mexico Highlands University where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Combined Science with an emphasis in Chemistry and Math and Secondary Education. He later joined the United States Army.  After eight years of service to the United States Armed Forces, he was honorably discharged.  During his service, Garcia would continue his education until completion.  After graduation from New Mexico Highlands University Thomas taught in rural New Mexico public schools as the science teacher and  the Junior Varsity and Varsity boys basketball coach.  After two years of teaching Thomas returned to New Mexico Highlands University where he graduated with honors as a member of Phi Kappa Theta, a history honor society, and the Master of Arts degree in Southwest Studies. 

 

In 1998, Thomas was hired as an adjunct professor of History and Political Science at Luna Community College, a position he has held to this day.  In 2000, Thomas was hired by Congressman Tom Udall to run his Las Vegas district office.One year later Thomas was promoted to the position of Deputy District Director for Congressman Udall, a position he held until 2007 when he became a member of the New Mexico State Legislature.  Thomas currently holds the top tier, state issued educators license as well as a state issued administration license.

 

Thomas has been married to Vanessa, a kindergarten teacher, for ten years and together they raise their children Melinda and Antonio.
