ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) — An emergency meeting to censure a County Commissioner Michael Wiener, who’s stepped into another scandal , was canceled Thursday but continued as a public bashing for the man who’s seen more than his 15 minutes of fame.
By law three Bernalillo County commissioners are needed to have a quorum, and the two women on the five-person commission were the only ones to show up. The county manager was called in to officially cancel the formal meeting that soon after became a public bashing, a wiener roast of sorts.
The public present pointed out that Wiener, posing with what may have been prostitutes in a red light district in the Philippines, was wrong.
“I think its really tarnishing to New Mexico and to Bernalillo County to have this be our poster boy,” Mary Broderick said.
It’s an image that's spread across the world and even made it onto late-night television.
“Guess what we've got? A another Wiener on our hands; a county commissioner from New Mexico named Michael Wiener,” host and comic Jimmy Kimmel said.
Wiener's picture was plastered on last night's Jimmy Kimmel live show and included with another famous Wiener, Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress last year after sexting photos of himself to several women.
While Thursday’s meeting was only on record for about 13 seconds, the man in the center of all of this scandal has seen more than his 15 minutes of fame.
“If he is not forced to resign as many have called for then, he should be censured,” Joann Ellen said.
That didn't happen on Thursday. Some in attendance blamed the other men on the commission.
Commissioner Art de la Cruz told KRQE News 13 he was in another meeting when the emergency meeting was taking place but still did not see why the Wiener scandal was an emergency.
Commissioner Wayne Johnson was also tied up and also said this issue was not time-sensitive and will be heard on Tuesday.
Wiener sent News 13 a statement explaining why he ditched the meeting.
“My schedule had already been committed to doing work on behalf of my constituents who are more concerned about jobs and the economy than they are with what has become a media sideshow," he said in the statement.
