SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KRQE) — Sunland Park's City Council will try yet again Friday night to pick a new mayor.
Javier Perea was sworn in as mayor last month but had to resign after questions whether his selection violated open-meeting laws because a large group of citizens couldn't get into council chambers or hear from outside what was going on.
So now the council will meet in a courtyard so a larger crowd can participate.
Perea may or may not be appointed again. Reportedly three others want to be considered for mayor.
Perea was appointed after mayor-elect Daniel Salinas was arrested in separate cases on extortion and bribery charges. He is accused of providing a stripper for an opposing candidate and then using a secret video of the lap dance to try to force the opponent out of the race.
