Senate candidates spent $6M in 6 weeks

SANTA FE (AP) — The latest finance reports show candidates for New Mexico's U.S. Senate seat have spent more than $1.6 million in the past six weeks as campaigns started airing television advertisements.

Republican Heather Wilson had a balance of about $1.4 million in her campaign account as of last week. She collected contributions of nearly $615,000 and spent $608,000 from April 1 to May 16.

Las Cruces businessman Greg Sowards raised $15,500 and spent $80,300 in the race for the GOP nomination. He reported cash-on-hand of $641,000.

In the Democrat primary race, Rep. Martin Heinrich raised nearly $330,000 and spent $722,000, with a campaign balance of nearly $1.2 million. State Auditor Hector Balderas netted contributions of almost $36,500 and spent nearly $247,000. Balderas reported cash-on-hand of $183,000.

The primary election is June 5.
