Political aide gets teacher e-mail list

SANTA FE (AP) — The Public Education Department supplied Gov. Susana Martinez's political adviser with a list of teachers in schools without union contracts.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports state workers and computers were used to create a list of nonunion teachers and their email addresses.

Department spokesman Larry Behrens said the list was in response to a public records request from Martinez political aide Jay McCleskey.

A May 2 email from Behrens to McCleskey explained how the list was created. The email also went to administration officials, including the governor's chief of staff, at nongovernment email accounts.

A union-financed political group known as Independent Source PAC released the email and says the department appears to have done political work violating a law against use of state property for nongovernment purposes.
