ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) — Former New Mexico state senator Aubrey Dunn Sr. has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 84.
Family members tell the
Alamogordo Daily News that Dunn died Thursday evening in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he had been staying with family.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
A native of Alamogordo, Dunn served in the Senate for 15 years before retiring in 1980. At one time, he was chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
Dunn was also a rancher and co-owner of the Daily News.
The newspaper reports that he was one of four state legislators who attended the first Legislative Prayer Breakfast in 1980.
Dunn's son, Republican Aubrey Dunn Jr., confirmed his father's death. The younger Dunn will be facing Democratic incumbent Phil Griego this fall in the race for the District 39 Senate seat.
